What is a Trainee Provincial Inspector?
A Trainee Provincial Inspector is more than just a traffic officer in training. This role requires discipline, integrity, and a strong sense of public service. Trainees will learn how to:
- Enforce road traffic legislation fairly and effectively.
- Manage accident scenes and ensure road safety.
- Control and regulate traffic flow in busy or congested areas.
- Participate in specialised operations, such as speed testing, abnormal load escorts, and compliance checks at testing centres.
The training goes beyond traffic regulation—it aims to instill professional values, teamwork, and leadership qualities that trainees will carry into their future careers.

Programme Details
- Post Title: Trainee Provincial Inspector
- Reference Number: DOT 416/2025
- Number of Posts: 200
- Salary: R193 359 per annum (Level 04)
- Duration: 2 years (2025–2027)
- Training Centre: Traffic Training College, Pietermaritzburg
- Placement: After completing the Traffic Officer’s Diploma, candidates will be deployed to RTI stations across KwaZulu-Natal
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for this opportunity, applicants must meet the following:
- Education: Senior Certificate / Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) or equivalent.
- Driver’s Licence: Valid Code B (manual transmission) licence.
- Age: Applicants must be 35 years or younger at the start of training.
- Citizenship: South African citizen or permanent resident.
- Criminal Record: No criminal record (SAPS clearance required).
- Medical Fitness: A recent medical certificate (not older than 3 months) proving fitness for strenuous exercise. Candidates will also undergo a full State medical examination before appointment.
- Character: Must be a fit and proper person with no disqualifying history.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Trainee Inspectors will be expected to:
Skills Training Programs
- Conduct traffic law enforcement operations.
- Direct and control traffic to ensure smooth flow.
- Safeguard accident scenes and assist in investigations.
- Identify hazardous locations and provide recommendations to management.
- Participate in special traffic projects and operations.
- Issue notices, execute arrests when necessary, and represent the Department in court proceedings.
- Escort abnormal loads and vehicles.
- Conduct compliance checks at Driver Licence Testing Centres (DLTC) and Vehicle Testing Stations (VTS).
